Book Week/ Literacy Theme

School = Brownlow school ( Nicki & The Winter Animals (Recycled Murals)

Objective = Get children to work together to learn about recycling & use there knowledge of a novel called Nicki & The Winter Animals to recreate artwork using recycled clothing materials.

Conclusion = During the course of a full week all Ks 2 children worked together with Dean The Art Wizard & staff to create to huge 3d relief murals for display in the sports hall. Approximately each session lasted 1hr 30mins, all 250 pupils contributed. During the sessions children learnt through creating the artwork & this helped them remember literacy from the book.

School = The Grove Primary School Melton Mowbray Leicestershire 2010 & Creative Partnerships

Objective = Vehicles Of The Imagination; children were taught various art & design skills, to encourage literacy skills including teaching teachers CPD techniques & skills during a 20 day period.

Conclusion = Children learnt how to design original imaginative conceptual vehicle characters, relief art, photomontage, animation & teachers gained valuable CPD. All children were inspired to write stories regarding their charcaters

Schools = Sherard Primary School, Swallow Primary School, St Peters Primary School Wymondham, Somerby Primary School, Scalford Primary School, Old Dalby Primary School, St Mary’s COFE Primary School, St Barthlomews COFE Primary School, Frisby COFE Primary School, Claybrooke Primary School, Asfordby Hill Primary School, Asfordby Captains Close Primary School

Objective = This cross-curricular project has been used more than once in various schools above, each pupil learns how to design fruit & veg superheroes or junk food villains & they also learn how to sculpt their own characters. Each session is usually based on a class of 30 children & it takes a full day to complete. (Please note you can adapt this project to encourage children to gain valuable literacy skills)

Conclusion = Children created their bespoke characters but started writing stories about them including creating fantastic visual stories. This project can be adapted throughout the national curriculum. Maybe your school would like to animate their characters & bring them to life! Schools are now able to buy this particular project as a school resource pack.
